- Semantics
- The search for the meaning of whatever that has to be designed so as to better define the parameters for design. This helps designers create things that are appropriate and meaningful.
- Syntactics
- The many components that make up a design (eg: grid/typeface/illustrations). Syntactic consistency is of paramount importance.
- Pragmatics
- Designing things that can be understood (Your work should be able to speak for itself)
- Discipline
- Design without discipline is anarchy, an exercise of irresponsibility.
- Without discipline, there is no good design, regardless of its style.
- Appropriateness
- The search for a specific solution for any given problem.
- To define what is appropriate helps to prevent us from taking wrong solutions.
- Ambiguity
- Rather than being known as vagueness (which has a negative connotation), Vignelli has a positive interpretation of it as an intended plurality of meanings.
- However, one should be cautious when playing with ambiguity because it might backfire, or look like a sign of discontinuity.
- History, Theory, and Criticism
- One of the most important aspects in the formation of a designer should be a deep understanding of design history, the development of theories and the criticism generated by them.
- Without knowledge of the past, there is no understanding of the present and no formulation of the future.
- Anything that we create reflects a particular approach which in turn, reflects some theory. Hence, it is important for designers to be aware and understand what they are doing, independent of any form or style.
- Knowledge of design history is important because it allows designers to understand contemporary phenomena to better formulate their theories and therefore their designs.
- Only when designers have developed a mental theoretical structure, they can begin to develop a tool of criticism to examine all forms of creativity (also known as a critical eye).
- Modernism
- It is not a style, but the projection of an ideology encompassing awareness of the production process and the final destination of its products (Form follows function).
- Design is One
- The discipline of design is one and can be applied to many different subjects, regardless of style. It is above and beyond any style.
- Design is a discipline, a creative process with its own rules, controlling the consistency of its output towards its objective in the most direct and expressive way.
- Visual Power
- Good design is an expression of creative strength bringing forward clear concepts expressed in beautiful form and color, where every element expresses the content in the most forceful way.
- Intellectual Elegance
- The sublime level of intelligence that has produced all masterpieces in the history of mankind (Greek statues, Renaissance paintings etc).
- It is also our civic consciousness, social responsibility, sense of decency, way of conceiving design, moral imperative.
- Timelessness
- Design that lasts, that responds to needs, not wants.
- Design that is centered on the message rather than visual titillation.
- Design that is clear, simple and enduring.
- Responsibility
- There are three levels of responsibility:
- One – to ourselves, the integrity of the project and all its components
- Two – to the client, to solve the problem in a way that is economically sound and efficient
- Three – to the public at large, the consumer, the user of the final design
- Designers should commit themselves to reach the most appropriate solution that solves the problem without compromises for the benefit of everyone.
- There are three levels of responsibility:
- Equity
- When Vignelli was asked to design a new logo for the Ford Motors, they proposed a light retouch of the old one which could be adjusted for contemporary applications. This was his way of showing respect for history in a context that usually has zero understanding of this values.
- He could not see a reason to dispose of a logo that had decades of exposure and already rooted in people’s consciousness with a set of respectable connotations.
- Basically, corporate identities should not be changed just for the sake of it.
- Light
- Talks about that importance of light in shaping our perceptions and the various ways designers could consider playing with it in their works.
- Arbitrariness
- the quality of being based on random choice or personal whim, rather than any reason or system
- Context
- Understanding the context allows designers to interpret and transform its requirements in a creative way.
- Influences
- Differs from inspiration in terms of duration.
- Influence affects the mind in a deep and formative way while inspiration usually flashes like a creative burst and allows us to reach temporary highs, sometimes with consequences.
- We are all formed and influenced by the world around us so it is important that we continue to sift through all available offers, to enrich the meaning of our contribution and to get it more depth and substance.
- Marketing
- Good design needs courage, vision, and determination, not focus groups.
- Vignelli gave an example of a pitcher, which was turned down by American focus groups but were sold successfully for a long time by European entrepreneurs who never asked for anyone’s opinions and just made them and sold them.
